(:question:)What is the name given to a 'free html' text box?

I'd like to insert some boxes into a column layout but nothing jumps out at me as being the right thing.

I'd like to either run some code and/or advertisements. Is there perhaps another way to do this?

I might be wrong but I think you mean Admin > Layout > Custom module - there you can name a new module, give it a title and some content ... any HTML or JS. Some use it to include Adsense. Only after this step, you go to that Layout page you mentioned and include the new module. (It's going to be wrapped into the same code like other modules so you will have boxcontent etc.)
