Using Pigeonholes

I have gone into the Admin>pigeonholes> and selected that I want pigeonholes for images and uploaded files; and so I get a 'categories' scroll bar at the bottom of both of these actions but without content. ie no categories to select.

Where are the categories set so that they show for users to select?

Once you've logged-in, from the top menu select Categories->Create Category. AFAIK, under current paradigm, you havta create the categories first, then add content (which can be done while in the Categories module, under the List Content tab).

After the categories have been created, they show up in the selection list for specific (new) uploads.

Hmmm, now that you bring it up, it would be kinda handy to be able to create a category 'on-the-fly' so to speak, when you uploaded a file; or when ANY content was added to your site...

Don't know how much coding it would take. Perhaps you'd like to submit a Feature Request at the SourceForge Project Page for bitweaver?

In 2.8.0 creating categories on the fly is working (as I understand that idea)
