{quote format_guid="bbcode" comment_id="5057" user="arnaudherve"}This is a very wide subject, that concerns Bitweaver to a certain extent only, but I thought it would be interesting to mention it here still. Sorry if it is too long. My experience is from the French education system, but I guess the need is exactly the same anywhere. What I describe here is one emerging tendency among others, and not the totality of the world of computers and schools. This post is about secondary education only. If you were imagining how it works in universities, just forget about it. This is a different world. University students are more or less adults to whom you give tasks and they will manage their own time. In secondary education, you'd better consider your class as a horde of Tolkenian Uruk-Hais, who will do ANYTHING to ruin your career. In a secondary education class, hell is always a lingering fire. There is ALWAYS a strength relationship. You win or they win. And yeah, children are angels and all that sort of things. Especially teenagers. They're known to be angels. Teenagers in groups especially. Just hide when practicing your karate katas before confronting the class... As far as the Internet is concerned, this can be summed up as a need for valid documents and judicial safety. [list:ae175814b7]VALID DOCUMENTS: The education system is still ruled by an ideology from the Nineties, that considers the web as absolute knowledge, as "an opening to the world", a "universal database"... and in that sense a total and undiscriminated connection is recommended. However, teachers in their individual practice are still responsible for limited, validated and adapted courses: [list:ae175814b7] Limited, because a lesson is about one thing and not the endless universe. A lesson about Ancient Egypt must be about Ancient Egypt. In that sense the possibility to click towards anything is a nuisance for concentration. Valid, because a site that explains that Napoleon was an alien is not valid for your lesson (Napoleon was a Corsican, not exactly the same). Adapted, because a thesis about knee surgery is too complex for a junior lesson about human anatomy. [/list:u:ae175814b7] In that sense you not only have to avoid sites that are plainly wrong, but also sites that are overly opinionated, sites that are well-meaning but partially wrong, sites that are above the level of your class... JUDICIAL SAFETY: In secondary education, students are minors, and that changes everything. As a teacher you are responsible for anything they will do under your supervision. In that sense, compared to an unconnected classroom, the web is clearly danger, unlimited danger. Illegal action is so easy, so one click away, that access to Internet is becoming unreasonable. That can include access to porn sites, saving of stolen mp3.... [/list:u:ae175814b7] Of course that is what every adult does at home. Even teachers... That's why secondary education is another world. To make a long story short, there is now a need for network activities, that would be like the Internet, but unplugged from the Internet. The aim of the Kamchatka project is to add one server to the already existing network, that would provide the services of an Internet service provider: [list:ae175814b7] For groups, one click and Class C has a blog, one click and Class D has a wiki, one click and Class E has a forum... For individuals, automatically created mail address and webspace, plus ftp account into Apache directory in order to learn what it is to publish. Email system without possibility to send or receive from the internet [/list:u:ae175814b7] Of course, the Kamchatka server is planned to connect to the ldap of the main login server, in order not to lose time with serveral passwords. Last, the kamchatka server is close to another need for unplugged computer rooms: the concentration on learning office suite skills on local stations. IN SHORT: the Kamchatka architecture creates a [u:ae175814b7]web laboratory[/u:ae175814b7], i.e. a rarefied atmosphere with clearly identifiable and isolated exercises. It is also learning what is interesting in the Internet, in a protected environment suitable for beginners.{/quote}
