SMTP server

I too have had probs with RC2. Why not post the secret formula here so that others can see?
For my part, I started off by entering my smtp host in the class.phpmailer.php file where I suppose it should go. But when that didn't work, I ended up putting my host info directly into the BitMailer.php around line 168 and assigned
$mailer->Host = 'mail.my_smtp.com';
My thoughts are:
1. Surely smtp settings should be set by some parameters in the kernel/database somewhere.
2. If it's so difficult and tricky to track down where to put the smtp, shouldn't there be some easily accessible info somewhere?
Please tell me I'm missing something. Also please tell me here; then at least some other confused user can learn from it.
