In earlier versions of Bitweaver all of the 'extras' are installed in the util directory. In BW3, the option has been provided for an additional 'externals' directory, and adodb, pear and smarty are loaded there. While it would be nice to use these third party libraries directly, there are a few little changes between a stock download and bitweaver version. In the case of the adodb and pear library, this addresses the e_strict errors and a few minor compatibility issues. The Smarty templating system is still using Smarty2, and while there has been a recent security update for it, the smarty site only normally supports version 3. So our own version has a few additional security fixes.
